Arne Jacobsen

Jacobsen was one of Denmark's most influential 20th century architects and designers. Both his buildings and products combine modernist ideals with a Nordic love of naturalism. After graduating from university, Arne Jacobsen worked in the architect's office of Paul Holsoe. In 1931 he founded his own design studio, which he directed until his death in 1971...

LC6 Table

Overview

LC6 Table. Inspired by the designer: Le Corbusier.

Description

In 1929 at the Salon d-Autumne in Paris, Le Corbusier and his team of designers presented a revolutionary collection of furniture that stunned the city.

Among the pieces was the ethereal yet bold LC6 Table (1928), a mathematically refined structure of steel and glass that has become one of the most important International Style tables of the 20th-century.

Made of  #304 stainless steel, the base is welded for a seamless finish with sculpted angles and smooth, mitered corners. The table base is height adjustable. The tabletop is a 15cm-thick tempered glass, making the LC6 equally right as a dining table and in the conference room. Together the elements create a sense of line, scale and proportion unsurpassed by other designs.

LC7-Swivel-Chair

Overview

LC7 Swivel Chair. Inspired by the designer: Le Corbusier.

Description

Designed in 1928, the LC7 Swivel Chair evolved from one of a number of experiments, including an attempt to fashion a chair by wrapping inner tubes from tires around a steel frame.

As the Le Corbusier group refined such trials, a sensuous solution took form. A round, thickly padded seat rests on top of a curving claw-like base of tubular steel that resolves in a swivel mechanism, allowing the robust seat pad a buoyant look. In the LC7 Swivel Chair the idea is expanded into an “armchair.”

A curved, amply padded barrel, doubling as backrest and chair arms, links three tubular steels supports that fuse at the seat base.

The result has become one of modernism’s most sublime icons.
